A range of emerging market currencies, including the rand, have been under pressure in the past week. This weakness is, at least partly, related to rising COVID-19 infections in some key economies, including the UK. Under current global economic conditions, a rise in global COVID-19 infections tends to undermine sentiment towards emerging markets, given the increased economic vulnerabilities in many emerging economies, especially to a slowing of the global economic recovery.
